Choosing a doggie's name can be an exciting and rewarding experience. When deciding on the perfect name for your furry friend, it's important to consider a few factors. You'll want to choose a name that reflects your pup's personality and unique characteristics. Observing their behavior and quirks can give you inspiration for a name that truly suits them. Another tip is to keep the name simple and easy to pronounce, both for you and others who will interact with your new dog. This will make training and communication easier for everyone involved. Finally, consider the length of the name. Shorter names tend to be more effective when calling your doggie's attention. So, whether you choose a name that reflects their playful nature or one that pays homage to a favorite book character, take the time to select a name that you and your new puppy will love!
Curiously, I have been able to name my pups at first sight. My first rescue was found on the street and followed me home. She deserved better, she needed to be treated like a duchess. Her name… Duchess. Another pup I named Spanky. She was a girl, and the name would confuse people. How did she get her name? When I held her for the first time, I held her to my chest and patted her bottom. Spanky just came out of my mouth. So, Spanky she
was. My Chihuahua rescue, whose name was Paco, immediately was changed to Winston.

The name just popped in my head. Why? I don’t really know. Billy Goat Bob AKA Billy did not have a name when rescued. His back story helped craft his name. You see, he was given to a child at Christmas, a short time later, the family decided he was to much work and he was put into the family's billy goat pen for his first year of life. Hence, Billy Goat Bob. Throughout his life, he exhibited the mannerism of a billy goat, which would bring a smile to my face. Sweet, sweet boy.
My first Scottish Terrier dog was named Sissy when she came to live with me. Didn’t fit her at all. I named her Megan Sue the Flying Witch. Megan Sue, because it fit her, the Flying Witch came from her Grand Champion grandmother. Little did I know she would later live up to that name by escaping out a 2nd story window and surviving. Yep, she jumped through a screen window. No injuries, just like she flew through the air and softly landed on the grass.
My second Scottie’s name was Sassy. I had planned on naming her Lucy, but when I saw her, it was love at first sight. She was named I Love Lucy Lou. For those of you that like to watch old sitcoms, you may remember the TV show, I Love Lucy. Lou was my mom's middle name. It just worked perfectly for her. Just a little fact, Lucy helped choose her brother Winston. They were best buds until she crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
My current Scottie was named Sabrina by her owner. What’s with the Scottie Dogs and “S” names? When she was adopted, I saw her sweet face and thought of the love Eleanor Roosevelt had for her Scottie dogs. She was named Eleanor Roosevelt from Arkansas. She goes by Elliroo. Her name inspired the name of my dog boutique. Fact, she is my first Scottie and first dog to sploot AKA frog legs. Love it!
It really doesn’t matter what you name your new puppy, all that matters is that they are loved and cared for until the day you have to say, “so long friend, see you on the other side”.
