Megan, my Scottish Terrier, joined me for our final move to Charleston, SC. It was sure to be an adventure.

Megan was big sister to a menagerie of rescues. She welcomed every new dog or cat I brought home. I rescued two kittens that were born on my back porch. I named them Teddy Bear and Spudnik. I took in a Samoyed rescue that was supposed to be a girl but when I went to get the dog, it was clearly a boy. I named him Billy Goat Bob. His story may come later. I had several birds throughout Megan's life, but Bird, an orange canary, made the move with us. As did Teddy Bear, Spudnik, and Billy Bob.

I hopped in my pick-up truck with all in their respective crates and essentials to get us through until all my belongings arrived four days later. And the journey began. Got on the highway, with a plan in place. Where to stop, let them out, feed and water, gas up and get right back on the road. It was a beautiful sunny day in late July.

My final stop was planned for Columbia, SC. Since I was about an hour and a half from my destination, I decided to stop and fill up the truck. It was hot when I got to Columbia so I left the truck running with the A/C on while I ran inside to use the restroom. I came back out and found I had locked them all inside and my key fob would not work with the engine running and the doors locked. Yes...I panicked. I'm in a strange city and don't know a soul. But the hospitality of the South was alive and well. The clerk called the police. They came, but were unable to break into the car. They suggested a local locksmith. I made that call and waited nervously for their arrival. I must have walked around that truck 500 times to try to burn off the anxiety. Even though I knew the air conditioning was on and the truck was under a canopy at the gas pump, I still worried about my family that was locked inside my truck.

The locksmith showed up, popped the lock, paid $117 to Pop-A-Lock, and we were on our way. We arrived to our destination with temperatures of 104 degrees!
